Singapore attractions - tourist attractions in Singapore
The
twilight holds many surprises ... and more so at the Night Safari, where
you can look a rhinoceros in the eye or hear the howls of a pack of striped
hyenas. The Night Safari is the world's premier night zoo that allows
you to view animals in their nocturnal setting with the use of special
illumination that simulates natural moonlight.
The entire enclosure is divided into 8 geographical zones, for example,
the Southeast Asian rainforest, African savanna, Nepalese river valley,
South American pampas and Burmese jungle. There are over 1,200 animals
of more than 110 exotic species to watch out for.
The best way to explore the Night Safari is to start off with the relaxing
tram ride. The tram moves silently to avoid frightening the animals and
is accompanied by an interesting and educational commentary. You may get
off at tram stations to explore the walking trails through each zone,
and easily rejoin the tram anytime. Do avoid flash photography, as this
will only startle the animals.

The
beginnings of the zoo may be traced back to the 1960s when the British
forces were withdrawing out of Singapore and left behind their family
pets. Officially opened in 1973, it has grown to win acclaim as one of
the world's finest with its "open" zoo concept, where the use
of natural barriers like streams, rock walls and vegetation help separate
animals from visitors.
Spreading over 70 acres, it is home to over 3,000 mammals, birds and
reptiles, none more popular than the orangutan with whom you can have
breakfast or tea. In fact, it is the only zoo that allows you to do that.
The zoo's breeding program has also witnessed the first tropical birth
of a polar bear. Other endangered species like the Malayan tiger, the
white rhino, proboscis monkey, komodo dragon and the sea lion have also
found a haven in the zoo. One interesting highlight is the Fragile Forest
- an exciting and educational display of ecosystems and rainforest culture.
Journey through Hamadras Baboons - The Great Rift Valley for a unique
Ethiopian experience, where you will come across a troop of hamadryas
baboons, a herd of ibexes, a call of jackals, hyraxes and mongooses. Aside
from a dazzling variety of wildlife and plant life, replicas of the Konso
and Amharic Villages take you back in time and reveal the cultural elements
of Ethiopia.
To enjoy the zoo, board the regular tram service and get an excellent
overview of the various attractions. However, to fully appreciate the
zoo, the tram introduction should be complemented by a walking tour as
well as viewing any one of the extremely entertaining animal shows.

One
of Asia Pacific's largest and most impressive bird parks, Jurong BirdPark
offers you an experience that is entertaining as well as educational.
Its landscaped environment is home to over 8,000 birds from 600 species,
displayed in huge enclosures. The bird shows at the Pools Amphitheater
featuring flamingoes, macaws, hornbills and cockatoos are both spectacular
and funny, and recommended particularly for children. To watch magnificent
birds of prey in action, catch the 'Fuji World of Hawks' show!
The Southeast Asian Birds Aviary houses in its 24 individual aviaries
and a main walk-in aviary, more than 100 species of birds from the equatorial
jungles of Southeast Asia. The birds' natural equatorial habitat is recreated
within this exhibit, including simulated tropical thunderstorms everyday
at noon. Another walk-in aviary not to be missed is the Waterfall Aviary,
home to more than 1,500 free-flying African birds.
In 2001, the BirdPark added the Riverine exhibit, a simulated natural
freshwater river habitat featuring various species of waterfowl, fish
and turtles. Here, you can watch more than 20 duck species diving in the
water.
The latest offering from Jurong BirdPark is an all-new breakfast program
complete with a star-studded bird cast. Known as "Pelicans, Parrots
and Prata", the program takes place at the Songbird Terrace overlooking
the Flamingo Lake, with breakfast available from 8am to 10:30am and the
show beginning at 9:30am. The breakfast buffet is priced at SGD 13.50+
for adults and SGD 9.50+ for children. Prices quoted do not include admission
to the park. For reservations, call (65) 6-264-2055. For a sumptuous lunch,
try the international buffet or a la carte at The Lodge on Flamingo Lake
- a theme restaurant overlooking a flamingo-filled lake.
The best way to start a tour of the BirdPark is to board the modern,
air-conditioned Panorail system. Its route covers the entire park, providing
excellent elevated views of the various exhibits. A walking tour is also
worthwhile as you will be able to see the birds close up.

Any
trip to Singapore will be made more memorable by a visit to the Tiger
Balm Gardens. First built in 1937, Haw Par Villa holds 25 clusters of
original statues and figurines which tell the intriguing stories of Chinese
mythology, legends and Chinese values.
Described by past visitors as "fascinating, delightful, bizarre
and entertaining", the Tiger Balm Gardens is like no other place
in the world. Dramatizing Chinese legends and folklore, the colorful statues
and figurines immortalize moral values and Chinese cultural heritage for
generations to come. Be fascinated by the commitment of the pilgrims in
Journey to the West, the adventures of the Eight Immortals invading Neptune's
Palace, and the virtue of Lady White Snake.
The original park was built by ointment king and newspaper magnate Aw
Boon Haw to educate overseas Chinese about their cultural heritage. Aw
Boon Haw built these wonderlands for several reasons. One was to provide
a recreation facility for overseas Chinese and in the process, educate
them about their rich cultural heritage. The gardens had a practical purpose
as well. Being a forerunner in marketing his famous Tiger Balm ointment,
Aw Boon Haw figured that people who came to his park would tell others
to go to the Tiger Balm Gardens and thus, help to promote his famous ointment.
Just as he did when marketing his fabulous ointment, Aw Boon Haw took
the task of designing the Tiger Balm Gardens seriously, carrying it out
with a twinkle in his eye. He made sure that the enchantment he saw was
executed to delight, soothe, and frighten in just the right proportions.
The fantastic environments evoke both delight and horror in you; but no
matter what reaction you have to the gardens, once visited, the memory
is enduring.

Sentosa
was originally known as Pulau Blakang Mati (meaning 'the island behind
which lies death' in Malay). It was believed that the island got this
name when a malaria outbreak wiped out the entire Bugis community that
was residing on the island.
From a fishing village, the island was later turned into a British military
fortress until 1967 when it was handed back to the Singapore Government.
In 1968, the Government decided to develop the island into a holiday resort
for local visitors and tourists. The public was invited to suggest names
for the island and "Sentosa", meaning "peace & tranquillity"
in Malay, was eventually chosen to depict the island resort.
Today, Sentosa has evolved to become Singapore's favorite leisure island
resort. Nature, history, recreation and fantasy - Sentosa offers all these

Asia's
most exciting tropical aquarium, Underwater World, gives the visitor a
fish's-eye view of the mysteries of the sea. Its submerged tunnel, with
a moving walkway, takes you past more than 2,500 marine creatures from
250 species. It is a strange yet exciting feeling - like you are in a
submarine with a glass roof, watching huge fish and hungry sharks cruise
above and around you. The view is ever changing. You will journey from
the coral reef to the open ocean, bypassing the lost city of Atlantis,
traveling through mysterious dark realms and entering a sea cave inhabited
by gigantic sea creatures. Be dazzled by the display of seahorses, the
weedy sea dragon which resembles the mythical Chinese dragon, piranhas,
electric eels and even a dugong.
Not all of Underwater World's attractions are below the surface. The Turtle
Pool is home to the endangered Green and Hawksbill turtles. You will relish
the contact with marine creatures such as starfish and sea cucumbers in
the aptly named Touch Pool.
The Dolphin Lagoon is Underwater World Singapore's latest attraction
and is located on the Central Beach of Sentosa Island. This lagoon is
home to several Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, also known as the Pink
Dolphins. A variety of interactive and educational activities, designed
to demonstrate the natural ability of these dolphins, are now available
daily. Did you know that pop superstar Mariah Carey had the wonderful
opportunity to swim with these dolphins during her visit to Singapore
in the Spring of 2000?
For the more adventurous folks, you may also arrange to dive with the
sharks for SGD 95 which includes provision of diving gear. Advance booking
is required. To book, call the Marketing Department at Tel: (65) 6-275-0030,
Fax: (65) 6-275-0357 or e-mail: uwsmktg@underwaterworld.com.sg
You may have watched sharks eating in an aquarium. Why not give them
a chance to watch you eat?
For the first time in the world, you can dive into a whole new thematic
dining experience on the seafloor. At Underwater World Singapore, you
can savor a sumptuous dinner on a gently moving underwater walkway, enjoy
a breathtaking view under the sea accompanied by live soft music, and
be entertained by a fascinating underwater performance. As you tuck into
your delicious meal, you will notice thousands of pairs of eyes eyeing
you with a growing interest. You'll wonder: Are they thinking of me as
a meal as well?
This dinner is available to organizers of private functions, incentive
travel groups or group bookings. It is not open for public and individual
bookings. For more information, please contact the Marketing Department
